Integrated Services Digital Network (ISDN)

  • Integrated Services Digital Network (ISDN) is comprised of digital telephony and data-transport services offered by regional telephone carriers. ISDN involves the digitalization of the telephone network, which permits voice, data, text, graphics, music, video, and other source material to be transmitted over existing telephone.
  •  It was first defined in 1988 in the CCITT (now ITU-T) 
  • ISDN is a circuit-switched telephone network system, which also provides access to packet switched networks
  • There are several kinds of access interfaces to ISDN defined as Basic Rate Interface (BRI), Primary Rate Interface (PRI) andBroadband ISDN (B-ISDN).
  • Bharat Sanchar Nigam LimitedReliance Communications and Bharti Airtel, are the largest communication service providers, offers both ISDN BRI and PRI services across the country
  • ISDN components include terminals, terminal adapters (TAs), network-termination devices,
  • line-termination equipment, and exchange-termination equipment.
