Bandwidth

Bandwidth

  • The amount ofdatathat can be transmitted in a fixed amount of time
  • For digitaldevices, the bandwidth is usually expressed in bits per second(bps) or bytesper second
  • Foranalogdevices, the bandwidth is expressed in cycles per second, or Hertz (Hz)
  • bandwidth is often used as a synonym fordata transfer rate
    • The following table compares the usable bandwidth between the different Transmission Media
Cable Type Bandwidth
Open Cable 0 - 5 MHz
Twisted Pair 0 - 100 MHz
Coaxial Cable 0 - 600 MHz
Optical Fibre 0 - 1 GHz
  • A typical voice signal has a bandwidth of approximately three kilohertz (3kHz);
  • An analog television (TV) broadcast video signal has a bandwidth of six megahertz (6MHz) -- some 2,000 times as wide as the voice signal.
